Greg Rekus (Winnipeg)
With an acoustic guitar in his hands and a giant stomp box under his feet, Winnipeg’s Greg Rekus delivers his own unique brand of punk rock-infused folk music guaranteed to shake rafters, move floorboards and get even the most stoic of concert-goers out of their seats. From the U.K. to the Ukraine, through Canada, the United States and Mexico, Rekus is no stranger to the touring circuit, sharing the stage with friends and delighting audiences far and wide with songs from his three independently released full-length albums, all the while setting an entirely new standard for DIY music.
For Rekus, touring is a way of life and he has no plans to slow down. The first half of the last year was spent touring North America, UK and Europe. Greg played over a month of shows with Tim Holehouse from London, England across western Canada and the West Coast USA in January 2018. Come spring he dipped into the mid west and east coast USA and then a pair of show in Quebec before hitting Europe for over 2 months. Shows included 2 weeks with Holehouse across the UK. An opening slot for Propagandhi in Germany as well as show in firmiliar places like france and italy and new places like Slovakia and Greece. After a busy summer at Rekus' side gig as a sound tech he lauched into a north american tour and spent almost 3 months playing a giant loop of the continent with Paige Beller from Ohio. Most notable was No Idea Record’s The Fest in Gainesville, Florida at the end of oct. This was rekus' 5 time playing the festival.
The 86's (Moose Jaw)
"The Many Rooms of Old Lady Winchester” is the first release from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan rock band The 86’s.
The 86’s are; Jaymz Robb - Bass & Vocals, Ryan Stusek - Drums, Anthine Savoie - Guitar & Dave Howard - Guitar.
The 86’s formed in 2016 during jams around Moose Jaw. With the departure of original drummer Mike Boss at the end of 2017 and the addition of the mighty Ryan Stusek on drums in early 2018 they are on a powerful new direction.
“The Many Rooms of Old Lady Winchester” represents the bands first year of existence. What can simply be accomplished by hard will, begging, borrowing, and stealing and a very punk rock D.I.Y. attitude. Not do it by yourself, but do it with your friends.
The album traverses many styles. Hard punk, stoner rock, prog rock, the blues, metal, psychedelia and straight up rock & roll. The album has everything from a hard banger under 3 minutes (Dying to Leave) a song about life working in professional kitchens, to the albums epic title opus “The Many Rooms of Old Lady Winchester” an over 9 minute song about Sarah Winchester. The Winchester Firearms widow and her compulsion to outrun the spirits of the dead killed by her late husbands firearms by constantly building on her Pasadena, California mansion for many years until her death.
The album was recorded and mixed by guitarist Dave Howard at his home studio during the fall/winter of 2017. It was later mastered by Dave’s long time friend Brodie Mohninger of Saskatoon. A well respected and prolific Saskatchewan musician and producer.
As for the future, things are looking great! 2018 has been a very productive year. The band is always working in the studio on new material. What has been crafted so far is heading the band in a brave new direction. We love to party, we rock the party!
